Letraset Flexmarkers

The lovely people at Letraset recently sent me some of their new Flexmarkers to try out. It's the latest addition to their marker range. Like the Promarker, it's a dual tip pen. At one end is the chisel nib, the same as both Promarkers and Tria markers. The other end (the Flex part) is a wonderful brush nib. Now, Tria markers have a brush nib too but the new Flexmarker nib is slightly different. As you can see in the image below, the Flexmarker nib gives a more fluid mark, very similar to the flexibility of an actual brush. The nib is cone-shaped, with a very fine tip and straight sides, and this is what allows a greater range of marks to be achieved.

In fact, the Flexmarker brush nib is an incredibly versatile tool, and you can use it to make a wide range of marks, just like a real brush. The ink really flows though it, so it's great for colouring large areas, as well as being lovely to draw with. I did this little sketch to illustrate the variety of marks and line you can make with it.

The Flexmarker range will have 72 colours, most of which are not available in the Promarker or Tria range, and they include some gorgeously subtle shades that are perfect for blending and creating depth of colour in marker paintings. In the illustration below I used both Tria's and Flexmarkers. The shirt and skin tones benefit from the light shades of the Flexmarkers. In fact a couple of the colours are so subtle that when you paint with them, initially it seems like you are not laying any colour at all - it's only when the ink dries that the colours show.

I'm really impressed with these pens. If you use Promarkers or Trias, use them for crafting or painting, you'll find them a versatile and valuable addition to your creative kit!

Smoke and Ashes

Monday was a rather dramatic day. Our neighbour lit a bonfire and managed to set fire to a large fir tree in his garden. Within seconds it had lit up like a torch and the garden shed under the tree, as well as the fences bordering the patch of garden, were ablaze. I watched this happen from my bedroom window as I called the fire service. They arrived very quickly and set about putting out the fire - just in time too. The fir tree to the right in the picture overhangs our garden (that's our fence at the bottom) - a couple more minutes and our fence would have been on fire too. The fires were quickly extinguished but there was the danger some gas canisters in the shed might explode. After about an hour the fire service left but worse was to come. We were outside with some of the neighbours surveying the damage when we noticed smoke coming from the roof of the next-door house (it's a house converted into 4 flats) and within seconds it was on fire, thick smoke pouring out. Thankfully nobody had re-entered the house after the earlier fire. We were all evacuated to the park across the main road to watch the firemen put out the blaze. We were terribly anxious in case the fire spread to our house. Slates were falling off the burning roof but amazingly nothing landed in our garden, though it did have a coating of ash and smut. We were allowed back into our house after about 2 hours. We were able to look though the window on our staircase and watch the firemen inside. We even pointed out a couple of areas that were still smoking so they could douse them!

All in all, a pretty scary experience. Fire investigators were here all day Tuesday, and arrests have been made. Sadly the 3 of the 4 are now uninhabitable, so people have been forced to find alternative accommodation. Thankfully no one was hurt. I was interviewed the next day by a local reporter - you can read the article and see more pictures that show how close the fire was to our house (on the right in the images).
