The lovely people at Letraset recently sent me some of their new Flexmarkers to try out. It's the latest addition to their marker range. Like the Promarker, it's a dual tip pen. At one end is the chisel nib, the same as both Promarkers and Tria markers. The other end (the Flex part) is a wonderful brush nib. Now, Tria markers have a brush nib too but the new Flexmarker nib is slightly different. As you can see in the image below, the Flexmarker nib gives a more fluid mark, very similar to the flexibility of an actual brush. The nib is cone-shaped, with a very fine tip and straight sides, and this is what allows a greater range of marks to be achieved.
In fact, the Flexmarker brush nib is an incredibly versatile tool, and you can use it to make a wide range of marks, just like a real brush. The ink really flows though it, so it's great for colouring large areas, as well as being lovely to draw with. I did this little sketch to illustrate the variety of marks and line you can make with it.
The Flexmarker range will have 72 colours, most of which are not available in the Promarker or Tria range, and they include some gorgeously subtle shades that are perfect for blending and creating depth of colour in marker paintings. In the illustration below I used both Tria's and Flexmarkers. The shirt and skin tones benefit from the light shades of the Flexmarkers. In fact a couple of the colours are so subtle that when you paint with them, initially it seems like you are not laying any colour at all - it's only when the ink dries that the colours show.
I'm really impressed with these pens. If you use Promarkers or Trias, use them for crafting or painting, you'll find them a versatile and valuable addition to your creative kit!
