The Wedding Portrait

9 x 6.5 inches, watercolor and gouache, 2010.

I was asked to paint this wedding portrait of the Doctor and Elizabeth I. It was inspired by a quip the Doctor made in the recent "End of Time Part One" episode, claiming to have married Elizabeth and her nickname no longer applying (The Virgin Queen). At the climax of an earlier Who episode, "The Shakespeare Code", we had seen Elizabeth order her guards to seize the Doctor, obviously recognising him and considering him an enemy - can we conclude the Doctor slipped away soon after the wedding and left Elizabeth heartbroken?

Walnut Whip Waltz

9.5 x 6.5 inches, watercolour, 2010.

I used to love walnut whips as a child - they were a favourite of my Mum's too. I hadn't had one for years and when deciding what chocolate to paint suddenly thought of them. I wasn't even sure they still made them. They do, but not like they used to. The chocolate case is now moulded rather than piped and the creamy inside is more sickly than I remember. The walnuts used to form the lid of the chocolate pot but now they are stuck on the top. So, a bit of a disappointment. Still, they made a good subject, looking like like chocolate daleks!

Cabbage and Onions

10 x 7 inches, watercolour, 2010.

I set the challenge for the WnW Watercolour group this month. The challenge was to paint from one of the photos I provided but only to use five basic colours (one red, one yellow, one blue and two of the artists choice) - all other colours had to be mixed from the five colours.

I chose cadmium red, new gamboge and cerulean blue plus burnt umber and opera rose.
You can see the colour chart below I made as I went along.

Edward I (Longshanks)

6.5 x 9 inches, watercolour, 2010.

Commission.

A portrait of Edward I based on an image of Patrick McGoohan's portrayal of him in Braveheart.

Edward was King between 1272 and 1307. He was a tall man (especially for his time) and was nicknamed Longshanks.
